Deer Hair Emerger

For ease of use and general all-round trout catching prowess, one of my favourite go-to flies has to be the Deer Hair Emerger. Created by the renowned Bob Wyatt, this pattern is simply a must for any self respecting fly box. I carry the pattern in a few simple sizes from #14 to #18 and, to be honest, I’ve been using solely this pattern for the majority of the season.

Thanks to Toby at Funky Fly Tying, I’ve opted to use the fabulous Nature’s Spirit Select Cow Elk (natural)some of the finest quality elk I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with (full review coming soon).

Hook: Partridge Grub/Shrimp Down Eye (K4A)
Thread: UTC Ultra Thread (70), white
Wing: Nature’s Spirit Select Cow Elk, natural
Body: Hare’s Ear, light olive
Thorax: Hare’s Ear, light olive

1. Wind on your thread, followed by a neatly stacked selection of elk hair, tapering as you go…
Deer Hair Emerger - Beginning the taper

2. Building a nice ‘buttress’ behind and in front of the wing with the dubbing will force it stand vertically, creating a perfect sighter…
Deer Hair Emerger - Side

3. And, from the front, splay the wing. This will give the pattern stability on the water, allowing it to sit correctly…
