Another Toughy, But More Happy Customers

Another toughy on the River Usk on Saturday for Bob and Gary, both of which were holidaying in the area and enjoying a weekend-long fishing trip. Both were looking to improve their river fly fishing techniques and knowledge of all things ‘running-water’.

A tough day on the Usk can be a hard day indeed, and can even have the angler doubting they have any skill at all. Add to that the current low water conditions and a blustery down-stream wind, and you have a rather ‘enduring’ day on your hands. However, Bob and Gary stuck at it, enjoyed the day, and caught fish despite the bad conditions!

The focus of the day was to improve on fishing techniques, reading the water, and how to search a river effectively – particularly useful if (like Bob and Gary) you decide to fish a brand new beat or are visiting a new river for the first time. Both upstream dry fly and searching the water with a duo of Klinkhamer and nymph were practiced, a little knowledge of what to look for on any stretch of running water, and a little casting instruction thrown in in order to tighten things up. Keep moving and keep searching is the name of the game in these conditions, and if the fish aren’t rising, the Duo method (New Zealand style/Klink and Dink) is a fantastic and highly visual searching technique.

With five fish between the guys by the end of the day, both were smiling and chuffed with what they’d learnt. To make things even better and, before returning home, the guys fished the River Ithon the day later, and I’m so pleased to hear that after putting their new skills and knowledge into practice, both were fishing well, catching, and feeling a lot more confident.

Job done, and with two happy customers. Well done both! You did brilliantly and were a joy to guide!
