Last Days of Trout, Casting Practice & Fly Line Reviews

The Evening View: The River Taff
The evening’s view, beats practicing in a field!

Only one more day until our beloved trout season ends and our small, wild stream trout are free from angling pressure until March 2011. March 2011…five long months away. God, evening typing it is depressing. Still, with the end of the season insight and with the first of the frosts appearing in the mornings, excitement and focus turns towards the beauty of Thymallus thymallus (I’m referring to Grayling, not you Phil).

Due to instruction and coaching commitments this coming weekend, my trout season actually finished a little earlier than planned this year, however, this evening was one spent on the lower River Taff practicing spey techniques and slack-line casts, both in preparation for this Saturday’s mock instructor assessment and the latter in preparation for a presentation I’ll be leading on said casts. It’s been one hell of a journey – albeit a hugely enjoyable journey – but man has it eaten into my fishing time.

The lower river was still showing the affects of a recent spate this evening and so no fish activity was spotted whilst out running through various casts. Of course, being the focussed individual that I am, I was geared up in ‘Instructor Mode’ anyway, so even if there had been fish rising anywhere, all I had on me was a set of nippers, spare tippet and leaders and lots of wool.

A break between practice enabled me to trial run RIO’s new Trout LT fly line; a full review for which will be available very soon, but if first impressions are anything to go by, this line is going to be a joy to use. I’ll need to test the line a little more thoroughly, but first impressions are very favourable indeed.

For those of you who manage to get out on the Welsh rivers and streams tomorrow on our last day of the season, happy hunting and catch a few for me! For those of you lucky enough to be able to fish for trout for a little while longer…happy hunting and catch a few for me!
